Take accused German wine forger Hardy Rodenstock, who died in 2018 still insisting on the authenticity of his discoveries, most notably bottles from the 1780s that supposedly once belonged to Thomas Jefferson. Keefe is frequently engaged with stories involving a rogue and a pursuer who is obsessed with bringing the criminal to justice. Taken together, the essays reflect the collective preoccupations of the unsettling era in which we now live: mass shootings and terrorism, unaddressed mental health issues, and the many flavors of financial corruption. Taken separately, each piece offers a portrayal of rogues variously defined, ranging from the overtly criminal to the lovable (in the case of chef Anthony Bourdain). In most of his previous best-selling books, including “ Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland” and “ Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty,” journalist Patrick Radden Keefe has masterfully illuminated what he calls his “abiding preoccupations.” These are, namely, “crime and corruption, secrets and lies, the permeable membrane separating licit and illicit worlds, the bonds of family, the power of denial.” His latest book, “ Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks,” offers a glimpse at these preoccupations in his shorter-form work, a collection of essays originally written for the New Yorker. Rogue Spy by Joanna Bourne6/11/2023 But at the drop of a hat, Cami was thrust into the Leyland family consisting of two aunts who were amazing code breakers.įor ten years she’d been safe in the village of Brodemere, playing the part of the Leyland’s nice. They became very good friends during this horrific period in their lives. At the age of ten, both Pax and Cami were taken from their homes and forced to live at the Coach House, a french owned house where kids were ruthlessly trained in killing, spying and anything else needed to become French spies. There are gray areas, complex pasts, revenge and a sexy romance that thrills the reader to the last page. And his heroine happens to be one too! But don’t fret, because these two get to keep their hero and heroine title. All three of these books are just fantastic and the wait for a new book literally pains me.įor those that have read the previous books, we found out Thomas Paxton or “Pax”, a well-regarded British Intelligence officer is a traitor in the previous book. Joanna Bourne writes the absolute best characters (the gushing has begun!). Not only for the world and events, but to build up these characters. Rogue Spy by Joanna Bourne (Spymasters #5)īefore I being gushing, and oh yes there will be gushing, let me note that while this book can be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading The Forbidden Rose and The Black Hawk first. Verity book reviews6/10/2023 It explores a darker side of some of her complex, traumatized, and morally grey characters, but remains as binge-worthy and addicting as any of her lighter romance titles. It was fuucked up to say the least, and unlike her other titles, it leaves you staring at your ceiling late into the night, maybe even afraid of turning out the light. This book is so unlike any other Colleen Hoover book you’ll ever read. How well do we really know the truth? Do we think we know absolutely everything, do we think we have a grasp on everything in our lives? What if you discover that it was all a lie? It could be earth shattering, inconceivable, traumatizing, horrifying, and make you want to scream into the dark at the absurdity of it all. This is a novel about the truth, different versions of the truth, what is true versus what is fiction, the characters an author can create, and when the line between them is called into question. Now, this quote can be or can not be actually related to this book, but I will admit that after reading it, this idea certainly came to mind. They say there are three sides to every story one person’s side, another person’s side, and the actual truth. Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman6/10/2023 Just when I felt like I had the character nailed down, he’d come out with something else to keep me guessing as his character arc progressed. There were several passages where his interpretation of the world and society in general are just so poignant that I had to read and reread and really let it sink in, because it was freaking marvelous. Others, he’s so on point in assessing the people around him that it’s scary. At times, he’s totally out of it and wrapped in his own world, and it’s really hard to wade through the delusions. There’s a little bit of everything with this character, which is why I loved him. But some of the thoughts he has? So deep and inspiring I had to read them twice. He’s snarky enough to whet my appetite for sarcasm, but he’s also just as confused as I am and, frankly, scared. The things I feel cannot be put into words, or if they can, the words are in no language anyone can understand. |
